*NOTE: Marriage certificate shows Daniel Costigan’s age as 25 years; however, baptism record from Tipperary shows his baptism took place 31 years before his wedding! Did Daniel deceive Anne about his true age or, like Eugene Sullivan, did he really not know how old he was? According to the “Digger” Death Index he was 88 when he died. Or should it be 94? Anne: Doyle was 81 and they both died in 1922 in Northcote.

GENERATION “G” i.

Children of Keiran Costigan (m. Kate O’Connor)

1. James Costigan b. 1803 d. 12/12/1886 at Castlemaine; m. Mary Bergin on 4/3/1832 at Templetouhy near Cashel, Co Tipperary, Ireland.*

(Some documents spell Mary’s surname “BERRIGAN” but Tipperary and Higgins records suggest correct name is “BERGIN”; I have met an Irishwoman who knew both Bergins and Berrigans in Tipperary; the parish priest of Templetuohy in 1988 was the Rev. Joseph BERGIN; and a Joseph Bergin was godfather of ‘old’ James’s firstborn, also James but who must have died in childhood- Adrian C.)

2. etc.- not known for sure if any other children but would have been unusual if there were not at least another half-dozen. However, Bernard Costigan who now lives in Queensland and whom I have met says that his mother claimed there were three brothers Patrick, James and John. Bernie says James was my ancestor and Patrick was his, therefore we are cousins. Patrick married Bridget Long, and three of her sisters married Higgins, Gorman. Lynch and Driscoll. Patrick’s son John is the father of Bernie, making Bernie my grandfather Jim Costigan’s FIRST cousin! Possible, because my line is of eldest or older children whereas Bernie’s seem to be youngest of large families. John Costigan died in 1943 aged 70, only six years after my grandfather who was 67 making him only three years younger. Documentary evidence needed.

*NOTE: James Costigan was baptised at Templetuohy in Tipperary in 1803, yet his tombstone in the Campbells Creek cemetery (south of Castlemaine) states year of birth to be 1800. He emigrated with his family to Australia in mid 1850’s, and settled eventually on a small farm at Bald Hill, South Muckleford, near Castlemaine. He died in 1886. The same tombstone gives Mary (Bergin) Costigan’s birthdate as 1815, and date of death as 19/9/1886.

Keiran Costigan married Kate O’Connor. Parents of James Costigan, birth dates unknown but if they were around 20 years old at birth of James, would have been born around 1783.
